The emerging approach of super-channel technology aligns with this economic reality and the limitations operators have when expanding their networks. Expectations are that by 2020, most large service providers will require 100 Terabits per node in their long haul networks. Super-channels are on a path to reach this level of capacity and the first super-channel likely to go into a production network will be Infinera's DTN-X with the 500 Gb/s PIC.
