Juniper’s long awaited jump into the packet optical transport market has finally materialized with the company’s announcement of its PTX Series, a new purpose-built switch targeted for a fast Layer 2 switched IP/MPLS core that includes integrated optics or a separate optical shelf.
This product introduces a new breed of core switches that we refer to as “the next-generation label switched router (LSR).” What makes this product different? It’s all about the architecture. Juniper’s new PTX chip set called Junos Express is radically different from off-the-shelf chip sets or its chips in the T-Series, MX or MX 3D. The Junos Express chip set within the hybrid fabric will ultimately deliver two terabits per slot capacity. In addition to efficiency and speed, the chips deliver cost savings of up to 65 percent over legacy architectures, according to Juniper Networks.
Service providers and content providers have been looking for Layer 2 MPLS switches that can scale on this level but at improved cost points. The PTX is purpose built and will include an external optical shelf in the second release.
In this video, Mike Marcellin from Juniper Networks discusses the PTX.
