In 2006 Eve Griliches wrote that photonic integration "might be the most disruptive technology to hit the telecommunications market in a decade." At that time, interest in the all-optical network was fading, and photonic integration was generating excitement and controversy in the industry.
Heated discussions revolved around the huge cost required to invest in the fabrication of photonic chips. The market claimed that Indium Phosphide (InP) would have ridiculously low yields and would be unreliable for long term optical network deployments. The discussions were intense, because most optical vendors were using component parts available at that time, and there was a narrow set of system-level differentiators.
